Ventricular Assist Device
A ventricular assist device (VAD) is a mechanical pump used to support heart function and blood flow in people with weakened hearts or heart failure. It helps either the left, right, or both ventricles pump blood.
Types
- Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) – supports the left ventricle
- Right Ventricular Assist Device (RVAD) – supports the right ventricle
- Biventricular Assist Device (BiVAD) – supports both ventricles
Notes
- Takes blood from a heart chamber and pushes it into the appropriate artery
- Connected externally to a power source and control unit
